- Students return and check out books at the beginning of each media class.
- Students in Kindergarten may check out one (1) book at a time. If a K student cannot return their library book during media class, they must wait to check out a new book when they have returned the old one.
- Students who cannot check out new books may choose from a variety of paperback books stored in tubs in and around cozy reading areas in the library. If student wishes to “borrow” one of these books to read at home they may do so.
- Students in grades 1-2 may check two books at a time.
- Students in grade 3 may check out 3 books at a time.
- Students in grades 4-5 may check out four books at a time.
- Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 may also check out Playaways (Playaways are audio books loaded onto mp3 players. Only one Playaway at a time with a maximum of three other books, and only after having turned in a signed Playaway permission form to be kept on file in the library).
- If a student in grades 3-5 has one or more overdue books, they may still check out other library books to meet their maximum of three or four books.
- Open checkout is available 7:10am-2:20pm daily for students in grades 1-5.
- Faculty and staff may check out an unlimited number of books.
- Faculty and staff check out their books independently using the Faculty and Staff Barcode book that is kept on the Circulation desk.
- There is no fine for overdue library books. Just return them as soon as you are able! :)
- Lost books must be replaced by the end of the school year. Since library books have a special binding, we cannot accept store-bought books as replacements. We can only accept payment in the form of a check made out to OPES or cash.
- Damaged books will be repaired if possible. If, however, the book has gotten wet, sticky, ripped, chewed, or is otherwise damaged so that repair is not possible, the student’s family will be asked to pay to replace the book.
- Students are allowed to request books on Destiny using their echalk logins. Once a requested book comes in, the student has two weeks to check it out. It is the student’s responsibility to check the hold shelf when they are in the media center to see if the book is ready for them. If the student does not check out the book within two weeks it will go back on the shelf.
- Inter Library Loans are also possible at the request of a faculty or staff member. Mrs. Longworth will contact other media specialists in the district and receive the book by courier.
- If a member of the faculty, staff, and/or parent community feels that the content of a book is controversial, questionable, or inappropriate, they are welcome to submit a “Request for reevaluating media materials” form from the Fort Mill School District.
- A committee comprised of the media specialist, principal, and other members of the faculty and staff will review the book(s) and discuss.
- The media specialist will research other challenges made to the title and bring this information to the committee
